What to pack for a high altitude trek? Tips & Guidelines

If you are a fan of outdoor activities, then high altitude hiking must be one of your most favorite things to do. As it brings in the thrill and the adrenaline rush that very few other things tend to do. Apart from the feel-good factors, high altitude hiking also seems to give you one of the best views of the most desolate places in the world, the views are breathtaking in nature.

But high altitude hiking can be risky too. Hence, you will have to be prepared to face all the challenges that come your way when you are attempting to climb the mountain. As high altitude trekking can be dangerous on multiple fronts, hence you need to be careful about what to take with you so that you can be safe from all the troubles that come your way.


1. Backpacks


You will have to carry all that you need on your back on your way through the mountains, hence you need to have the right sized backpack, which won’t be too heavy for your journey, yet be able to store all the necessary goods that will come handy.


2. Dry Sack


High altitude treks can be very unpredictable when it comes to weather and you need to be prepared for the worst of it. Carrying a dry sack is very important to keep all your other things dry from rain or snow, if you fall right into it.


3. Clothes


This is the most important part as you will have to keep yourself well protected in the drastic weather that can come your way. Following are some absolute musts that you have to carry on your journey.


  • Trekking pants.
  • Cotton shirts which will be easy to dry.
  • Multiple pairs of socks.
  • Sleeping clothes.
  • Thermal underwear, which will keep you warm.


4. Shoes: 


When you are going on trekking, shoes form a vital part of your journey as you will be falling into various situations which will require various kinds of shoes.



  • Hiking Shoes: Hiking shoes are a very important part of your hiking trip. Hence, you need to invest in a pair of good hiking shoes which will be comfortable and not very bulky yet it will be hardy. High cut boots are better as they provide greater support and hence protection from sprains and ankle turns. 
  • River Shoes: At the end of the day you need to get rid of your trekking shoes and give your feet some rest. This is when you will be needing river shoes or even flip flops and worn with socks. These will help you travel from the tents to and from the nearest bush.
